Naukuchiatal: My Timeless Escape into Tranquility
There are places that become an inseparable part of one’s soul, weaving memories that last a lifetime. For me, that place is Naukuchiatal – a serene gem nestled in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Fondly called “Nauki” among close friends, this beautiful lake town has been my retreat since 1997. Over the years, it has witnessed my journey, from solo explorations to cherished moments with friends and family.
My connection with Naukuchiatal is not just that of a traveler but of someone who has seen it evolve. One of my fondest memories is staying at Deja Vu Cottage, a quaint, charming retreat that was built right in front of me. Even today, this cottage serves as my base camp whenever I visit, offering me a home away from home.
A Serene Alternative to Nainital
While Nainital is a popular destination, drawing crowds during peak seasons, Naukuchiatal has retained its peace and tranquility. Its lesser-explored corners, lush greenery, and the pristine nine-cornered lake offer an idyllic escape from the chaos of city life. Here, the air feels fresher, the mornings calmer, and the sunsets more poetic.
The Journey: Delhi to Naukuchiatal
One of my most memorable trips to Naukuchiatal was en route to a business visit to Khali Estate, Binsar, Almora. Instead of rushing through, I decided to take a night halt at my favorite cottage before continuing my journey the next morning.
The drive from Delhi to Naukuchiatal is a rewarding experience in itself. Winding roads, misty landscapes, and occasional roadside chai stalls make it an enjoyable ride. After an evening spent unwinding at Deja Vu Cottage, I prepared for my next leg of the trip—the drive to Almora and Binsar.
Travel Essentials:
- Nearest Railway Station: Kathgodam (KGM)
- Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant (Dehradun)
Naukuchiatal to Mountain Resort, Khali Estate, Binsar via Almora
I started early at 7 AM, knowing that the journey ahead was both scenic and exhilarating. Covering approximately 66 km in about two hours, the drive was smooth, barring the numerous stops I made to soak in the stunning Himalayan vistas.
The Mesmerizing Drive Through Almora
As I approached Almora, the landscape transformed dramatically. The distant snow-capped peaks began to emerge, standing tall against the clear blue sky. Every turn on the road brought forth a new frame worth capturing.

Binsar: A Hidden Paradise
Leaving Almora, I ventured into the deep forests leading to Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the most untouched and breathtaking destinations in Uttarakhand. This last stretch of 24 km winds through dense oak and rhododendron forests, making it a dream drive for nature lovers.
Important Travel Tips for Binsar:
- Restricted Entry: The sanctuary closes its gates after 9 PM due to active wildlife presence.
- Altitude Range: 900 to 2500 meters, averaging around 2412 meters.
- Best Activities: Birdwatching, trekking, photography, and jungle safaris.

Khali Estate: A Step Back in Time
Perched at the top of a hill, Khali Estate is more than just a resort; it is a historical landmark. Originally owned by Sir Henry Ramsay, the Commissioner of Kumaon (1856-1884), the estate has hosted renowned personalities, including Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, the sister of Jawaharlal Nehru. Today, it stands as a peaceful getaway, surrounded by towering pine and oak forests with an unobstructed view of the mighty Himalayas.
After a night spent at this incredible retreat, I wrapped up my work and began my journey back, carrying with me yet another unforgettable experience.
Why Naukuchiatal Remains Special to Me

Every visit to Naukuchiatal strengthens my bond with this timeless place. Whether it is the soothing sound of the lake, the quiet walks through pine forests, or the cozy nights at Deja Vu Cottage, Naukuchiatal will always be more than just a destination—it is a part of my soul.
For anyone seeking solitude, beauty, and a deep connection with nature, Naukuchiatal is a treasure waiting to be explored. And for me, it will forever remain my personal slice of paradise.
